Racing History
1954-1956: Grandpa Dewey Dirkson’s first race car was a 1939 Chevy. His first driver was Dick Reiter. Note: That is how he picked #39.
1957-1964: Grandpa’s second driver was Harold Petree. Their highlight during 1961 was 7 feature wins in a row at Husets Speedway. Harold is in the Hall of Fame at Husets Speedway.
1965-1967: Grandpa’s third driver was Roger Larson. Roger is in the Hall of Fame at Husets Speedway and Knoxville Raceway.
1968: Grandpa teamed up with Ron Tysdal. Their driver was Bud Berger. Bud is in the Hall of Fame at Husets Speedway.
1967-1974: Father Keith Gunderson was a drag racer.
1969-1971: Grandpa with Ron Tysdal. Their driver was Bill Mellendberndt. Bill is in the Hall of Fame at Husets Speedway and Jackson Speedway.
1985: Greg Gunderson started his first year of Enduro racing after he won a drawing for a free enduro car.
1986: Greg bought a new car (#8) for his second year of Enduro racing.
1988: Greg borrowed parts from many different people including Steve Sharpe to build a sprint car to start his first year of sprint car racing.
1989: Greg landed a ride with help from Grandpa, Bill Mellenberdnt, Uncle Guy Dirkson, and Ron Tysdal for his second year of sprint car.
1990-1993: Greg drove sprint cars for Ron Tysdal. Guy Dirkson was the Chief Crew, Grandpa was the motor builder. Tony Nelson and Mike Vis were the pit crew.
1994: Greg drove #32 sprint car for Dick Valentine.
1996: Greg bought his own #39 sprint car and drove for himself.
1997: Greg drove #7s sprint car for Ross Shenk.
1998-2001: Greg started a sprint car parts business and sold for 4 years.
2000: Greg drove #1A sprint car for Daryl Arends
2006: Greg drove #85X sprint car for Justin Saathoff.
2007: Greg drove #77 sprint car for Troy Vink.
2008: Greg drove # 39 for Saathoff Motorsports
2009: Greg drove # 39 modified for Saathoff Motorsports
2009: Greg drove # 34W sprint car for TW Motorsports
2009: Greg drove # 21 micro 600cc sprint car for Morris Motorsports
